Japan topped the medal table on the opening day of the International Judo Federation (IJF) Hohhot Grand Prix in China.

A total of five golds were on offer during today’s first set of competitions at the Inner Mongolia Stadium in what is the final IJF World Tour event before the World Championships taking place in the Hungarian capital of Budapest, due to begin on August 28.

After the fights were completed, Japanese judokas had topped two podiums.

Toru Shisime picked up a third Grand Prix title as he claimed the overall victory in the men’s 60 kilogram category.

He met Mongalia’s Amartuvshin Dashdavaa in the final and a waza-ari following a yoko-otoshi combined with an ippon saw Shisime take gold.

Japan’s second gold came in the women’s 57kg as Momo Tamaoki beat the Rio 2016 Olympic Games silver medallist Sumiya Dorjsuren of Mongolia in the final.

A further two golds went to Asian judokas.

South Korea’s Kang Yu-Jeong topped the women’s 48kg podium by defeating Russian Irina Dolgova.

The women’s 52kg title was picked up by a North Korean judoka in the form of Rim Song Sim who saw off Canadian Ecaterina Guica in the final.

Today’s final gold was earned by Yakub Shamilov of Russia in the men’s 66kg category, with Ukrainian Georgii Zantaraia taking the silver.
