Rio 2016 Olympic champion Khasan Khalmurzaev claimed a home gold today at the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Slam in Ekaterinburg.

It proved a solitary home success for Russia at the Palace of Sports on a day where Japan secured three more gold medals.

Khalmurzaev secured an ippon after just 58 seconds to defeat two-time Grand Slam second place finisher Attila Ungvari of Hungary in the under-81 kilograms final.

It was his second Grand Slam gold after victory in Baku in 2015.

He had earlier required overtime to defeat Dutchman Frank de Wit in the semi-final.

De Wit missed out in the bronze medal bouts as Etienne Briand of Canada and Zebeda Rekhviashvili of Georgia shared the final spots on the podium.

World champion Mami Umeki was among the three Japanese winners today.

The 22-year-old beat British opponent Natalie Powell by submission in the women's under-78kg final.

Anna Maria Wagner of Germany shared bronze with Abigel Joo of Hungary.

Sarah Ashini continued the form she showed at the Paris Grand Slam in the women's heavyweight over-78kg event.
