Alexander Bublik is set to be the first opponent who Sir Andy Murray will face at the 2017 Wimbledon Championships after the draw was made today.

The reigning men’s singles champion from Great Britain will play the Kazakhstani, ranked 134th in the world, on Monday (July 3) on the opening day of competition at the All England Club.

Bublik, who represented Russia until last year, made it into the main draw after receiving a lucky loser spot.

Concerns have surrounded Murray, the world number one and double Olympic gold medallist, after he pulled out of two exhibition matches he was due to play at the Hurlingham Club in London this week, citing a sore hip as the reason behind his withdrawal.

Despite being seen walking around with a limp during a practice session today, Murray has said he is still planning on defending his title.

He has been drawn on the same side of competition as Spain’s Rafael Nadal, who won his 10th French Open title earlier this month at Roland Garros, with the duo set to meet in the semi-finals if they reach that far.

Nadal, who won the Olympic men’s singles gold medal at Beijing 2008 before topping the doubles podium alongside Marc Lopez at Rio 2016, will meet Australia’s John Millman in the first round.

Switzerland’s Roger Federer, the current Australian Open champion and a seven-time winner at Wimbledon, was drawn against world number 84 Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine while Serbian Novak Djokovic will begin his hunt for a fourth men’s singles crown at the venue against Slovakia’s Martin Klizan.

In the women’s singles, top seed and world number one Angelique Kerber of Germany will face either a qualifier or lucky loser, with the identity of the player still to be decided.

Second seed Simona Halep is in the same position as Kerber, with the Romanian due to meet a qualifier or lucky loser in the first round.

Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, who won the French Open title with her surprise victory over Halep in the women’s singles final, has been drawn against Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus.

Petra Kvitova, playing her second Grand Slam since being stabbed in the hand at her home in the Czech Republic, starts her quest for a third Wimbledon crown against world number 52 Johanna Larsson of Sweden.

The women’s singles final is due to be played on July 15.

The men’s final is set to take place a day later.
