Luxembourg claimed three of the four road cycling gold medals on offer as action begun today at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) in San Marino.

Pit Leyder set the nation on their way to a hat-trick of titles after clocking a winning time of 2 hours 22min 33.505sec in the men’s road race final.

Home favourite Federico Olei came second in 2:22:33.526, while Monaco’s Andrej Petrovski completed the top three in 2:22:34.058.

Elise Maes secured Luxembourg’s second gold medal with victory in the women’s road race final.

Maes posted a time of 2:17:23.833 to finish ahead of Iceland’s Erla Sigurlaug Sigurdardottir, the runner-up in 2:21:33.000, and compatriot Edie Rees, the bronze medallist in 2:21:33.342.

Luxembourg also won the women’s road race team final in 7:00:30, beating sole challengers Malta by 4:17.  

The men’s road race team final went the way of hosts San Marino, who triumphed in 7:07:46.

Andorra were second in 7:07:49, while Malta came third in 7:07:50.

There was also action at the Multieventi Swimming Pool today with Iceland’s Bryndis Run Hansen among the winners thanks to success in the women’s 100 metres freestyle event.

Hansen triumphed in 57.11 with Liechtenstein’s Julia Hassler second in 57.27 and Cyprus’ Kalia Antoniou third in 57.83.

The equivalent men’s event saw Julien Henx lead a Luxembourg one-two with a time of 50.11, beating Pit Brandenburger by 0.58 seconds.

Malta’s Andrew Chetcuti rounded out the podium in 51.14.

Other swimming victors included Monaco's Tiffany Pou in the women's 200m butterfly in 2:20.93.

Beatrice Felici secured silver for San Marino in 2.21.39 and Iceland's Bryndis Bolladottir took bronze in 2:23.80.

Another sport in which medals were awarded today was athletics at the San Marino Stadium.

In the women’s high jump, Montenegro’s Marija Vukovic came out on top with a leap of 1.91m.

Iceland’s Maria Run Gunnlaugsdottir had to settle for silver with 1.71m, while Andorra’s Claudia Guri Moreno finished third with 1.68m.

The men’s long jump was won by Iceland’s Thorsteinn Ingvarsson with 7.54m, holding off fellow countryman Kristinn Torfason who took silver with 7.42m.

Cyprus’ Matthaios Volou was the bronze medallist with 7.19m.

There was further success for Iceland in the women’s javelin with Asdis Hjalmsdottir registering a throw of 60.03m.

Behind her was Cyprus’ Marielle Rousi with 49.16m and Luxembourg’s Noemie Pleimling with 47.29m.  

Out on the track, the men’s and women’s 100m finals headlined today's competition with Cyprus’ Paisios Dimitriadis and Malta’s Charlotte Wingfield the respective winners.

Dimitriadis beat fellow Cypriot Andreas Chatzitheori to gold by 0.17 seconds with a time of 10.63, while Wingfield overcame nearest challenger Patrizia van der Weken of Luxembourg by a margin of 0.24 seconds in 11.62.

Iceland’s Ari Bragi Karason was the men’s bronze medallist in 10.81.

Cyprus’ Paraskevi Andreou came third in the women’s race in 12.04.

Three gold medals were also won in boules today with Monaco beating Luxembourg 13-1 in the men’s Lyonnais doubles finals, Luxembourg defeating Monaco 13-6 in the men’s Petanque doubles finals and San Marino overcoming Liechtenstein 12-3 in the men’s Raffle doubles finals.

Competition in San Marino is scheduled to continue tomorrow when medals will be won in boules, judo, shooting air, shooting clay, swimming and table tennis.
