The registration deadline for the inaugural International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletes' Forum has been extended until Friday (April 7).

The event will take place in German city Duisburg between June 8 and 10 and is billed as an opportunity for all Para-athletes to discuss and exchange ideas.

Classification, anti-doping, athlete representation and the Paralympic Games are expected to be among the topics covered.

"One of the goals of this event is to bring together athletes in a forum atmosphere to share best practices and create a communication structure," said outgoing IPC Athletes’ Council chairperson Todd Nicholson, a former ice hockey player for Canada.

"When you go home from this forum you will have a better understanding how to communicate within your International Federation (IFs) and National Paralympic Committees (NPCs).

"For the IPC Athletes' Council, it will help us have access to the athletes and vice versa.

"And, ultimately, it will help establish a better connection between the athletes and the IPC Governing Board and decisions makers within the Paralympic Movement."

The forum will be divided into two events, with day one bringing together athlete representatives from IFs and the IPC Athletes' Council.

The final two days will target those who hold representatives roles within NPCs or those who are hoping to do so.

Turkish archer and Athletes' Council member Gizem Girismen added: "The athletes' perspective is the essential part of the Paralympic Movement and sports.

"In the IPC Athletes' Council, we believe that exchanging ideas among athletes and recommendations from athletes' standpoints are of vital importance to the Paralympic Movement to remain and further become an athlete centered organisation.

"Your voice and your ideas matter."

To register, NPCs and IFs must submit an application form and nominate an athlete they would like to send to Duisburg.

Canada’s Chelsey Gotell was elected as chair of the Athletes' Council last week.

The triple gold medal winning Paralympic Games swimmer was elected to head the group for the next four years, replacing her compatriot Nicholson.
