Joanna Łochowska of Poland improved on her bronze medal last year to win gold at the European Weightlifting Championships in Croatian city Split today.

Lochowska proved too good for the rest of the field in the women's 53 kilograms competition.

The 28-year-old, who finished 11th at the London 2012 Olympic Games, earned a total score of 192kg.

She produced a best effort of 86kg in the snatch section of the event before adding a best lift of 106kg in the clean and jerk.

Atenery Hernández of Spain took second place with her overall score of 191kg after matching Lochowska in the snatch section but falling a single kilogram short of the Pole's clean and jerk effort.

Liudmila Pankova of Belarus completed the podium with her combined score of 189kg.

Evagjelia Veli of Albania, who finished eighth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, missed out on the podium as she took fourth with 182kg.

The rest of the field were inferior to the top two with the bronze medallist, Veronika Ivasiuk of Ukraine, finishing way back on 206kg.
