Cyclist Alison Shanks, basketball player Tania Tupu and swimmer Alison Fitch are among the athletes included in the first intake on the New Zealand Olympic Committee's (NZOC) Women In Sport Leadership Academy (WLSA) programme.

The initiative, which features a total of 18 Olympians who currently active in management or leadership positions within their workplaces, is due to officially get underway in Auckland this weekend.

It has been described as "world-leading" by the NZOC and will see participants develop confidence and leadership competencies, including career strategies and and a better knowledge and understanding of the women and sport movement in New Zealand and globally.

The WLSA uses funds delivered to the NZOC after the organisation won the International Olympic Committee (IOC) World Women in Sport Trophy in 2015.

"It’s about the transition from elite performance on the field-of-play to elite performance through leadership," NZOC chief executive Kereyn Smith said.

"We have hugely competent athletes with a powerful array of skills and characteristics that have seen them succeed in sport.

"The Academy will help them go on to contribute to and lead in sport, business, the community and more.

"It is hugely exciting.”

The New Zealand Olympians will become part of a network made up of graduates from over 30 countries, according to the NZOC.

Four workshops and numerous networking and group activities, aimed at connecting participants with female leaders in sport and business, will be delivered by a team of facilitators, led by Robyn Cockburn and Pauline Hansen.

Workshop topics covered will include presenting with style and impact, coaching for success, how to be persuasive and effective, growth mindset and managing conflict.

The beginning of the programme coincides with International Women’s Day on Wednesday (March 8).
