The group are all Olympians and have been tasked with sharing their achievements and stories with youngsters across the country.

It is hoped they will pass on the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect to Kiwi children, while encouraging them to take part in sport and live a healthy lifestyle.

Interactive presentations will be part of the work of the ambassadors, who will operate in primary and intermediate schools.

The children involved will mainly be aged between eight and 13. 

Every ambassador was selected as they are seen as "highly positive role models" for the young New Zealanders.

Several hundred school visits will be made in 2017, it is hoped.

At the end of last year, more than 86 per cent of Primary Schools had registered to access Olympic Education resources.

More than 7,000 teachers were using online tools related to the Olympic Movement.
