A minimum of three qualification spots in combat sports at Tokyo 2020 been targeted by the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) as part of their strategic plan.

The NOCC are also hoping to achieve their best-ever gold medal haul at this year's Southeast Asian Games, due to be held in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia from August 19 to 31.

The implementation of the plan is subject to approval at the NOCC General Assembly on March 21.

"We are greatly encouraged by the overwhelming success of a similar plan we put in place in 2013," NOCC secretary general Vath Chamroeun told the Phnom Penh Post.

"We met all our aims we had set out for, including the country’s first Asian Games gold medal in Incheon [in 2014] after a long and painful wait of nearly seven decades.

"We did well in the 2015 Singapore SEA Games.

"Sorn Seavmey did the country proud by qualifying for the Rio [2016] Olympics and we rolled out the inaugural National Games.

"We are well on course to build on these gains."

Taekwondo and karate are the sports the NOCC is hoping to qualify athletes for at the 2020 Olympic Games in the Japanese capital.

It is hoped the strategic plan, which aims to improve training and human resources development, will help Cambodia's athletes peak in time for Tokyo 2020.

"We want to provide the best training facilities possible for our national athletes, including sending them abroad, hiring experts and bringing in good foreign coaches," added Chamroeun.

"We would like our referees and officials to upgrade their competency so that they reach international standards.

"Overall our objectives are realistic.

"I would like to stress the importance of getting it right because we in the NOCC strongly feel that if we broadly achieve what we set out for, our task of staging the 2023 SEA Games would be that much smoother."

Cambodia made their Olympic debut at Melbourne in 1956 and have appeared in every Games since Atlanta 1996 but never won a medal.

Cambodia sent a team of six athletes to Rio 2016.
