Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter picked up her first victory of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup season after winning a night slalom in Austrian village Flachau.

The 31-year-old led after the first run and did enough in her second to come out on top with an overall time of 1 min 51:40sec.

She finished 0.58sec ahead of nearest challenger Nina Loeseth of Norway, while Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States and Switzerland's Wendy Holdener finished tied for third place, 0.78 back.

Victory for Hansdotter, the winner of last season's slalom World Cup title, was the fourth of her career.

The Swede also won in Flachau in 2015, while her two other triumphs came in Slovenian town Kranjska Gora in 2014 and Austrian town Lienz in 2015.

Shiffrin posted the fastest second-run time tonight but it was not enough to prevent her missing out on a slalom win for only the second time in seven races this season.

Shiffrin remains top of the overall World Cup standings with 1,008 points.

Switzerland’s Lara Gut, who failed to finish her first run today, is second with 643 points, while France’s Tessa Worley is third with 563.

Shiffrin also leads the slalom World Cup standings on 560 points.

She is followed by Slovakia's Veronika Velez-Zuzulová, fifth tonight, on 435 points and Holdener on 400.

The women’s FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup season is due to continue on Saturday (January 14), when a downhill is scheduled to take place in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee.

The Austrian resort is also set to play host to an Alpine combined event on Sunday (January 15).
