Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) sports director Martin Burke has been appointed as Chef de Mission for the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Györ in Hungary.

The EYOF is scheduled to take place between July 22 and 30.

Burke was Chef de Mission for the first ever Summer Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore in 2010 and subsequently for the event in Nanjing in 2014.

Most recently, Burke led the Irish team at the previous EYOF held in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi in 2015 and has been involved in 10 European Youth Olympics overall.

He was also part of the Team Ireland management at the Olympic Games at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Burke joined the Olympic Council of Ireland prior to Barcelona 1992.

His background is in canoe flat-water racing, but he has also competed in cycling.

In September, following Rio 2016, Burke was named as a suspect by Brazilian police, who are investigating an alleged ticketing scam following the arrest of OCI President Patrick Hickey during the Games.

Burke has denied any wrongdoing.

"Martin has a great understanding and background in dealing with Olympic Youth athletes and teams," said acting OCI President Willie O'Brien, who has replaced Hickey after he stood down from the post following his arrest.

"His appointment will be very much welcomed within our Olympic sports."

The EYOF is a multi-sport festival for young European athletes between the ages of 14 and 18, with the 2017 edition set to take place between July 22 and 30.

The Chef de Mission seminar is the next major event to be held in the build-up to Györ 2017 and is scheduled for between April 25 and 28.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity of leading and managing Team Ireland in Györ in Hungary in 2017." said Burke.

Györ welcomed the EYOF Coordination Commission and technical delegates from the European Olympic Committee last November.

The visit acted as a "thorough check" on the current state of preparations for the event.

Györ 2017 and Coordination Commission spent time with various departments and discussed in detail the current state of preparations.

All of the delegates, on their first visit to Györ, received a general presentation and were given a detailed tour of all sports venues, as well as discussing various organisational details.

The outcome of the visit was said to be "very positive" with Györ 2017 officials claiming to have made "great progress since the last CoCom visit".
