The governing body has confirmed the rules will be used in all official competitions under the Olympic Movement as well as the 2017 World Roller Games, which were moved from Barcelona to Nanjing earlier this year.

The FIRS admitted not all countries were using the same regulations and claim they “have observed first hand that the small differences between rulesets represent an easy transition for officials and athletes”.

Roller derby is one of 10 disciplines governed by the FIRS.

“We firmly believe that the new International Rules promote a safe and dynamic version of the sport that will help grow the visibility of roller derby to a broad range of audiences worldwide,” the organisation said in a statement.

“The materials included with the rules touch on the principles used to create the rules and on the main differences between the international rules of roller derby and other existing rulesets.

“We hope that these materials can help the community understand the objectives and philosophy of the rules, as well as the tangible differences that will be present while playing at a FIRS-sanctioned tournament.”

Following the publication of the international set of rules, FIRS has announced they will hold educational clinics in several locations across the globe.

They will contain classroom and on-skate sections, including theory and situational training with knowledgeable trainers.

Online seminars and practice tests will also be made available to “get people familiar with the rules at their own pace”.

As the only International Olympic Committee (IOC)-recognised body with a connection to the sport, the official governing body for new street and park skateboarding events at Tokyo 2020 will be FIRS, led by Italian Sabatino Aracu.

The sport was added to the Olympic programme for the Games in the Japanese capital at the IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro in August.
