Russia secured five of the 13 gold medals on offer at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Junior World Championships after their fighters produced a series of excellent displays in front of the home crowd in St Petersburg.

Ilia Popov began the gold rush for the hosts, dominating his under 48 kilogram light flyweight clash with Ireland’s James Coughlan, with the Russian being rewarded for his impressive performance by being awarded a unanimous points victory by the judges.

His achievement was replicated by his compatriot Nikita Piskunov in the under 52kg light bantamweight division as he cruised to a points victory over Turkey’s Unal Kalkisim.

There was disappointment, however, for Osman Aliev in the under 63kg division as he was outclassed by Uzbekistan’s Timur Marzhanov.

It proved to be the only defeat for the home team as under 66kg welterweight fighter Edgard Tcambov overcame Dilshodbek Ruzmetov by a unanimous decision in another clash between Russian and Uzbekistan boxers.

Russia’s five gold medal haul was sealed by under 70kg light middleweight Atrem Oganesian and under 75kg middleweight Magomedbek Makhmudov after the duo secured after judges’ deemed the pair had unanimously won their bouts with Turkey’s Bayram Malkan and Uzbekistan’s Kosimkhon Kosimov respectively.

Uzbekistan were the only other country to secure more than one gold as Bilobek Mirzarakhimov added to Marzhanov’s victory, winning the under 57kg featherweight division after the three judges all awarded him the contest against the United States’ Gabriel Flores.

Flores’ defeat was one of three for the American team as Jesse Rodriquez was beaten by Romania’s Cosmin Girleanu in the under 46kg pinweight class, while Rey Diaz found himself on the wrong end of a split decision verdict against Kazakhstan’s Daulet Nyssan in the under 50kg flyweight final.

It was left to Marc Castro to claim the only American gold, wining his under 54kg bantamweight final against Cuba’s Alexei Rodriquez Romero with a unanimous points verdict.

“It feels great for all those countless hours of training, those early morning training sessions, it is all worth it,” Castro said.

“The final was against a very good Cuban opponent, but I had the gold medal on my mind, and I was not going to stop until I got my hand raised.

“I knew I had to give it my all to win this medal.

"St. Petersburg is a beautiful place, and this was a great event and a great experience. I love it here.”

The remaining gold medals were claimed by Turkey’s Tugrulhan Erdemir, winner of the under 60kg lightweight final with a unanimous points decision over Ireland’s Patrick Donovan, while Cuba’s Dainier Pero Justiz and Azerbaijan’s Mahmmad won the under and over 80kg divisions, dominating their finals against Kazakhstan’s Khurshedshokh and Germany’s Daniel Malsam respectively.
