The International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series 2016-2017 season is due to take place this weekend with the Audi Cup of China set to take place at the Capital Gymnasium in Beijing.

The competition, scheduled to begin tomorrow and conclude on Sunday (November 20), is the fifth of six events in the series.

Skaters are competing for points to qualify for the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, as well as prize money of $180,000 (£145,000/€162,000) per individual event.

Three-time world champion Patrick Chan of Canada headlines the men’s event as the Sochi 2014 Olympic silver medallist aims to follow up on his win last month at Skate Canada International in Toronto, another ISU Grand Prix event, and secure his place at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Marseille next month.

Competition should come from 2016 World Championships bronze medallist Boyang Jin of China and Four Continents bronze medallist Han Yan, also of China.

The Czech Republic's Michal Brezina and Russian Sergei Voronov are also both expected to challenge along with Israel's Daniel Samohin, the 2016 world junior champion.

Ashley Wagner of the United States is the favourite in the women's competition.

The 2016 world silver medallist should face stiff competition from Skate Canada runner-up, Candian Kaetlyn Osmond, Russia's European silver medallist Elena Radionova and her compatriot Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, the 2015 world champion.

The pairs event appears to be the most open competition of the weekend as it boasts a mixture of youthful and experienced teams.

China's Xiaoyu Yu and Hao Zhang have only been skating together since last year but their partnership has already won them a silver medal at Skate Canada and they definitely have a good opportunity of securing another podium finish on home soil.

Russia's two-time European champions Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov will be aiming to improve upon a disappointing performance at the Hershey’s Centre in Toronto, where they finished fifth at Skate Canada.

The bronze medallists in Toronto, Canada's Liubov Ilyushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch, will be hoping for another Grand Prix medal while Cheng Peng and Yang Jin of China will be making their debut as a team this week.

In the ice dance event, World Championship silver medallists Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani of the US are looking to build on their gold at Skate America.

The main challenge should come from two-time World Championships medallists Kaetlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Canada, bronze medallists at the Rostelecom Cup in Moscow two weeks ago.

Russian's Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin, along with compatriots Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov, will be confident of reaching the podium as well.
