Action at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Under-23 Baseball World Cup resumed today with the first group of matches of the super round stage in the Mexican city of Monterrey.

World number one Japan narrowly beat Asian rivals South Korea 2-1 in a tight ten innings match to remain as the only undefeated nation at the competition.

After four scoreless innings at the start of the contest, the Koreans took the lead with a single run in the fifth.

Japan, however, pulled level in the seventh before, in the bottom of the tenth innings, Ryotato Yoshumochi scored the winning run to give the Japanese team yet another victory.

Keisuke Honda of Japan and South Korea’s Jiseob Lim were locked in a pitching battle throughout most of the game with Honda registering 12 strikeouts and Lim seven.

Elsewhere in the super round, Nicaragua defeated Panama 9-3 at the Estadio de Beisbol.

Nicaragua scored five runs in the fifth inning to grab control of the match and inflict Panama's first loss of the tournament.

In the third and final super round match of the day, the hosts defeated Australia 15-8.

In a lively opening to the game, both teams posted two runs in their first innings before Mexico added four more in the second to take control of the contest.

The Australians clawed their way back into the match in the third innings to make the score 6-4, before nine Mexican runs in the remainder of the contest to Australia's four proved enough for the hosts.

Super round action continues tomorrow with Japan facing Panama, Mexico taking on Nicaragua and Australia colliding with South Korea.

In the consolation round, which sees teams competing for places seven to 12 in the overall standings, the Czech Republic comfortably beat Austria, who are yet to win a match at the tournament, 14-7.

Chinese Taipei dominated South Africa, 8-0, with Venezuela, ranked seventh in the world, beating South American rivals Argentina 3-1.
