Mexico claimed the sixth and final place in the super round of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Under-23 Baseball World Cup with an easy 15-0 win over South Africa on the final day of opening round matches in Monterrey.

The hosts secured their progression courtesy of four runs in the first inning, three of which were scored by Moises Gutierrez, at the Madero stadium.

San Diego Padres player Jose Ureña added two of the five runs scored in the fifth to all but secure their progression before Carlos Diaz blasted four more in the sixth innings to win the match.

Mexico now join Japan, South Korea, Australia, Panama and Nicaragua in the super round after the field was cut from 12 to six teams.

Panama, ranked number 15 in the world, were crowned winners of group A following a stunning comeback to defeat South Korea 5-4.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth innings, Panama scored four runs, including a double from Ibrahim Dayan McKenzie Guerrero to snatch victory and first place.
