Germany's Isabell Werth produced a sublime freestyle score to win the second Western European League leg of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Cup Dressage competition in the French city of Lyon today.

The 47-year-old rider and her 11-year-old, Weihegold, delivered an outstanding performance that earned a total score of 90.09 points.

Werth is one of the most decorated athletes in equestrian sport and twice winner of the FEI World Cup Dressage title.

The pair, who claimed Olympic team gold and individual silver medals at Rio 2016, were always considered favourites to win this event.

What was not predicted, however, was the style in which they would claim victory,

"I was expecting she could do a super job, but to get more than 90 per cent, now that was amazing," said Werth.

"She has really improved since Rio."

Britain’s Carl Hester and his Olympic ride Nip Tuck finished second with a score of 85.02 points.

Defending FEI World Cup Dressage champion, The Netherlands’ Hans Peter Minderhoud, took third with Glock’s Johnson on 80.22 points.

"I had an easier ride today than yesterday," said Minderhoud.

"There was a small misunderstanding on the last centre line when my horse thought we were finished but we had to do a bit more."

In an all-German battle for fourth it was Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Zaire-E, who secured it ahead of Fabienne Lutkemeier and D’Agostino FRH by just 0.01 points.

Sweden’s Patrik Kittel aboard Deja secured sixth place on 77.97.

Kittel led the world class 15-strong field at the halfway stage, but once Werth had performed the result was never in any doubt.

The nine-leg FEI series is now due to to Stuttgart in Germany next month between November 16 and 20.
