The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine (NOCU) hosted the grand final of its sixth annual "Olympic Stork" project.

The aim of the initiative is to promote Olympic values, an active lifestyle, friendship, respect and patriotism among youngsters between the age of ten and 12.

Thousands of children from all 25 regions of Ukraine competed in school and regional competitions before 300 finalists from across the country were named.

The finalists then took part in a week-long series of sporting competitions and creative contests.

They were joined by 30 sporting stars from Ukraine, including 15 Olympic medallists, who shared their life stories with the young group.

The final was held at the Artek Youth Centre in capital city Kyiv.

Last month, the NOCU held its annual "Olympic Lesson" at the Olympic Stadium in the capital.

Backed by the country's Ministry of Youth and Sport and the Ministry of Education and Science, the initiative has now been run for 12 consecutive years.

The "sport celebration" also intended to encourage an active lifestyle and "harmonious" development.

Qualification events for the 2017 Olympic Stork competition will be launched in every school in Ukraine next month.

The European country won two gold medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics, with gymnast Oleh Vernyayev claiming the men's parallel bars title.
