The House of Hungary, which helped to promote Budapest's bid to host the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics during Rio 2016, has received special recognition.

It was chosen as the winner for the "most innovative national house" in 2016 Hospitality Houses Awards during a ceremony at the Rio Media Center by the Commercial Association of Rio (ACRio).

The award was given in partnership with the Municipal Olympic Company, the State Subdepartment of International Relations and the City Coordination Office of International Relations.

The innovations and interactive displays at the House of Hungary proved to be very popular with nearly 20,000 visitors, athletes and fans from all over the world.

Among them, the "walk the wall" feature attracted particular interest, especially from aspiring young athletes in the crowds.

This exhibition shone the spotlight on each Olympic medal won by a Hungarian, along with brief histories and exceptional sporting highlights.

The House was created around a water theme by a team of young Hungarian designers.

It included a high-tech, walk-on-water experience, a freshwater Danube river feature, and an aqua bar serving 17 different types of mineral water, including six medicinal.

Another landmark feature at the House was the giant Rubik’s Cube with a cultural display tucked inside.

Rio 2016 marked the first time that Hungary has hosted a national house, which was opened by the country's President János Áder.

The House was also visited by the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, to celebrate Hungary’s national day, St. Stephen’s Day, on August 20.

"On behalf of the House of Hungary team, the National Olympic Committee and the designers I’d like to say how delighted we are by this award," said Balázs Fürjes, chairman of Budapest 2024.

"Budapest is part of the UN Creative Cities Network, and our capital is characterised by a unique youthful playfulness.

"I think this imaginative spirit really shone through at our House.

"Thanks to our hosts in Rio for providing such a great opportunity for us to tell the world more about Hungary, whilst having great fun at the same time."

Winners in other categories included Bayt Qatar, in Botafogo, which won in the cultural promotion category for disseminating Arab culture and cuisine, as well as elements of architecture, music and even smell.

The House of Switzerland in Lagoa, with more than 160,000 visitors, was awarded in the social gathering category on the basis of the free activities offered during the Games and the legacy left to the city, which includes a baseball field in Rio.

The NBA House, with over 80,000 visitors - its largest turnout in the history of the Olympics - was elected by popular vote the best theme house with more than 1,000 votes.
