August 30 - Delhi Police claim they have completed the necessary preparations to provide comprehensive security for the Commonwealth Games, which several foreign countries have expressed fears could become a target for a major terrorism attack.

Delhi Police Chief Yudhbir Singh Dadwal said his department had made thorough plans for the event, scheduled to take place between October 3 and October 14.

"We are fully prepared for the mega sporting event," Dadwal said.

"Our force is trained, ready and positioned and I am fully satisfied about the preparations for the mega event."

Dadwal claimed that the force was in perfect condition and all arrangements were nearing completion.

Delhi Police are in charge of the overall security and transport arrangements for athletes and delegates during the Commonwealth Games.

Additional money was allocated to Delhi Police to conduct specialised training and import security equipment.

Members of the Delhi Police force have already been deployed at stadiums and the Games village, which has been built on the east bank of the Yamuna River.

Its traffic wing will carry out strict enforcement of special Commonwealth Games lanes from September 10, the day the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee expects the first batch of athletes and coaches to start arriving in the city.

Only vehicles which are appropriately labelled will be able to use the lanes earmarked for transporting athletes and delegates.

Delhi Police are to be assisted by more than 1,000 personnel from special army units, who are to be deployed at various venues from September 15.

The army personnel are slated to provide technical assistance related to communications within the police force, such as decoding any suspicious signals, and providing other logistics support.

The army will also deploy teams which specialise in dealing with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats during the Games.
