May 7 - Kenya today announced that they plan to send a team of 250 athletes to this year's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi after dismissing fears over security in the Indian capital.

Kip Keino, the chairman of the Kenyan Olympic Committee (KOC), ruled out withdrawing the team from the Games despite Britain and United States officials last month claiming a terrorist attack in Delhi was "imminent".

Keino said: "We are taking along several police and intelligence officers to Delhi for the Commonwealth Games in October."

Up to 10 police officers will accompany the team when they travel to Delhi for the Games, which are due to open on October 3.

Kenya have missed the Games only once since making their debut at Vancouver in 1954 when they joined the African boycott of Edinburgh in 1986.

They have won a total of 162 medals, including 59 gold, six of which came at Melbourne four years ago.

Kenya will again be looking to its squad of middle and long-distance runners to provide the bulk of their medals in Delhi but will also have high hopes for their rugby sevens squad, one of the leading teams in the International Rugby Board Sevens World Series.
