Budapest 2024 are “considering” the option of holding the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the under-construction Ferenc Puskás Stadium instead of staging them at a brand-new athletics stadium which is due to be built should they be successful with their bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The track and field facility, part of the Olympic Cluster of proposed venues, could now be scaled down from the original plan should Budapest 2024 opt to follow through with the idea.

If they push ahead with the suggestion, the venue will still play host to athletics but the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, which would be held on July 19 and August 4 respectively, would be moved.

The proposed athletics stadium will remain in place following the conclusion of the 2024 Games if they secure the hosting rights for the event and would be the main facility for the sport in the country.

The move comes amid a series of “upgrades” to the Games master plan, aimed at saving “tens of millons of euros”, according to Budapest 2024 chairman Balázs Fürjes.

The changes also include moving the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre to the Budapest Exhibition Centre.

A new facility was due to be constructed to house the world’s broadcasters and media but Budapest 2024 have now opted to use the Exhibition Centre, owned by GL Events.

Plans for a new Mountain Bike Centre have also been scrapped, according to Fürjes, with the sport now due to be held at an existing venue close to the city centre.

Cutting costs is seen as a key reason for altering the initial plan, submitted to the IOC in February of this year, although Fürjes stressed legacy, showcasing the city of Budapest and improving the athlete and spectator experience were also important factors.

The Ferenc Puskas Stadium is being completely rebuilt and is expected to be completed ahead of the UEFA European Championships in 2020, where the venue will hold three group games and one round of 16 clash at the tournament, the first to be staged across multiple cities on the continent.

Fürjes revealed that the tender for the Stadium is due to be issued soon ahead of the completion of the demolition of the current structure, which is set to be finished in September.

“The reason for all proposals was simple - to make Agenda 2020 real,” he told insidethegames.

“Because Budapest hasn’t bid for a long time, we had to come up with a brand-new Games plan.

“We have the advantage of a blank sheet.

“We are grateful for the dialogue and the nature of the bidding process.”

Los Angeles, Paris and Rome are also bidding for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The International Olympic Committee will elect its chosen host city at its Session in Lima in September 2017.
