The attendees ran 2,024 metres during the route, which passed several iconic landmarks in the city such as the Chain Bridge and the Parliament Building, with the Liberty Statute, illuminated in the colours of the Budapest 2024 logo, in the background.

The event, held on the eve of Olympic Day and which included both able-bodied and disabled participants, was co-organised by Budapest 2024 and events firm Budapest Sportiroda.

According to Budapest 2024, runners came from a number of cities and regions across Hungary to take part, including Győr, Miskolc, Debrecen, Szeged, Székesfehérvár and Balatonfüred, and 9,000 spectators lined the streets to support the runners.

Due to city restrictions, the number of participants was limited to 3,000 and spaces were completely filled on the same day they became available.

Budapest 2024 Athletes Commission chair Ágnes Kovács, Olympic swimming gold medallist at Sydney 2000, was one of the members of the Bid Committee involved in the fun run, alongside Olympic gymnastics champion Krisztián Berki and chairman Balázs Fürjes.

It was held after Hungary had earned a thrilling 3-3 draw with Portugal at the UEFA European Championships in France as they continued their surprise progression to the last 16 of the tournament.

The match in Lyon was shown on giant screens in Budapest before the fun run, creating a festival atmosphere before runners took to the streets of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games bid city.

“The atmosphere in the city right now is absolutely electric following Hungary’s performance at the Euros,” Fürjes said.

“Everyone is in such high spirits and we think that will be evident in the crowds tonight, running to show their support for our Olympic Bid.

“We’ll be sending our team off to Rio in the next few weeks, and Olympic Day is also a great opportunity to show our support for them and all the other athletes who will be competing.”

As well as the fun run, a number of other activities were also staged to mark Olympic Day, which marks the founding of the International Olympic Committee in 1894. 

Flash mobs of sport stuntmen and women entertained crowds of locals and tourists with performances themed around Olympic values ahead of the Night of Movement, a yearly event where the people of Budapest are invited join in at giant fitness tents and pop-up sport hubs around the city.

Budapest is bidding for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics along with Paris, Rome and Los Angeles.

The International Olympic Committee is due to elect the host at its Session in Lima in September 2017.
