Italy's Guido Vianello secured his place at Rio 2016 after beating Ireland’s Dean Gardiner in the super heavyweight final at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Open Boxing World Olympic Qualification tournament at Sarhadchi in Baku today.

Triumphing on a unanimous decision, Vianello avenged his loss to Gardiner at last year’s inaugural European Games in Azerbaijan's capital.

The Italian was rocked with a big right from his Irish opponent close to the final bell but managed to see out the fight and book his ticket to Brazil.

Joining Vianello at Rio 2016 will be Poland’s Igor Pawel Jakubowski, who defeated Ecuador’s Julio Cesar Castillo Torres by the same margin in the battle for the sole heavyweight place at the Olympics.

Although the allocation of the Rio 2016 placeshad already been determined in the other eight weight categories, there were still gold medals on the line today as action came to a close.

Ukraine’s Mykola Butsenko registered a second-round TKO victory over Mongolia’s Tsendbaatar Erdenebat to take the bantamweight title.

His victory was sandwiched between unanimous points wins for Bulgarian flyweight Daniel Panev Asenov and British light welterweight Pat McCormack against the United States' Antonio Vargas and Haiti’s Richardson Hitchins respectively.

Dutch lightweight Enrico Lacruz was equally assured in overcoming Tajikistan’s Anvar Yunusov, as was French welterweight Souleymane Diop Cissokho against Hungary’s Imre Balazs Bacskai.

Ireland’s Michael O’Reilly was one of three fighters to win a gold medal today without throwing a punch.

The 23-year-old, who qualified for Rio 2016 by finishing in the top five in the middleweight class, claimed top honours on a walkover at the expense Turkmenistan’s Arslanbek Achilov.

Light flyweight Rufat Huseynov and light heavyweight Teymur Mammadov, both of Azerbaijan, won by the same method.

Huseynov profited from Spain’s Samuel Carmona Heredia’s withdrawal, while Mammadov benefited from that of Germany’s Serge Michel.
