Pan American Games gold medallist Antonio Vargas of the United States and Glasgow 2014 champion Manoj Kumar of India were among the list of boxers to earn their spot at Rio 2016 at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Open Boxing World Olympic Qualification tournament at Sarhadchi in Baku today.

Vargas, who competes in the flyweight category, ensured he would represent his country at this year’s Olympic Games as he overcame Italy’s Vincenzo Picardo with a unanimous victory in his quarter-final clash.

Commonwealth Games light welterweight gold medallist Kumar, considered one of his nation’s brightest boxing prospects, booked his Olympic berth with a comfortable unanimous success against Tajikistan's Rakhimov Shavkatdzhon.

“Given the terrible state in which boxing is right now, I am relieved to have qualified for the Games,” Kumar said.

“There was a lot of pressure on the team which is competing here and I am glad that I came good.”

Kumar will be joined in the Brazilian city by Britain’s Pat McCormack, who proved too strong for Hassan Amsile of France.

“It’s an unreal feeling to qualify for the Olympics,” said McCormack.

“I was frustrated not to do it in Turkey at the first qualifier but always had faith in my ability and this time I made sure.”

Following McCormack’s win, compatriot Josh Kelly swiftly followed suit as he outpointed Trinidad and Tobago’s Aaron Prince in the welterweight division.

The two triumphs for the British team ensures the nation will send its largest boxing contingent to Rio 2016 having qualified places in all 10 men’s categories and two female divisions.

It also rules out the prospect of any British professionals competing at this year’s Games following AIBA’s controversial decision to let them take part in the Olympic boxing event alongside their amateur counterparts.

India were able to secure another Rio 2016 slot when top middleweight seed Vikas Krishan saw off South Korea’s Lee Dongyun, with all three judges awarding him the contest.

The US were another nation who sealed a second quota as Gary Russell swept aside Jordan’s Obada Al-Kasbeh in their light welterweight quarter-final bout.

He becomes the second boxer from his family to qualify for the Olympic Games after brother Gary Russell Jr qualified for Beijing 2008, though he was unable to compete at the event after he collapsed on the day of the Opening Ceremony.

Action in the Azerbaijani capital is due to continue tomorrow.
