Russia’s Aleksei Kuznetsov successfully defended his men’s F54 javelin title at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics European Championships after beating his Greek rival Manolis Stefanoudakis in Grosseto.

The two men have enjoyed closely fought battles in recent years, with Stefanoudakis having claimed top honours when they contested the event at last year’s IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha.

However, the world champion was forced to settle for silver in Italy, despite achieving a season's best throw of 28.96 metres.

Kuznetsov bettered the effort by achieving a world record distance of 29.91m to win the gold medal and send a statement of intent to Stefanoudakis ahead of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

“I felt ready and I expected to get that result and to beat the world champion,” said Kuznetsov.

“I trained a lot and so I wanted to do my best performance here before going on to Rio.

“I just hope I can get to Rio in top form and I will try to get even more powerful before Rio.”

Kuznetsov and Stefanoudakis were joined on the podium by Belarussian Aliaksandr Tryputs, who was able to claim the bronze medal with a throw of 25.47m.

Spain also enjoyed success in the field competitions, as defending champion Kim Lopez Gonzalez threw 15.62m to secure gold in the men’s F12 shot put.

The World Championship bronze medallist finished ahead of Croatia’s Miljenko Vucic and Yury Buchkou of Belarus, who achieved throws of 14.43m and 13.42m respectively to claim the minor medals.

Gonzalez’s gold was swiftly followed by a victory for his compatriot Sara Martinez in the women’s T12 long jump, with the Spaniard achieving a season’s best distance of 5.53m.

Anna Kaniuk added to Belarus’ growing medal collection by jumping to 5.45m into a headwind to win silver, while Katrin Mueller-Rottgardt achieved the same distance with the benefit of a tailwind, which resulted in her taking bronze.

On the track, Turkey’s Hasan Kacar won the men’s T11 5,000m by six seconds after finishing the event in a time of 16min 25.53sec.

Spain’s Manuel Garnica and Portugal’s Nuno Alves completed the podium by finishing in 16:31.64 and 16:49.57 respectively.

Six-time Paralympic champion David Weir saw off the challenge of his British team-mate Richard Chiassaro to win the men’s T54 400m final in 46.10.

“I was saying in warm-up that it would be great to have another Brit on the podium alongside me, I’ve never had it before,” said Weir.

“I didn’t really mind what colour I got to be honest but it’s great to get a one-two with Rich

“It’s good for the relay as we have a really strong squad, I’ve always said the boys had potential and they are showing that this week.”
