World Championship silver medallist Noelle Lenihan is among the headline names included in Ireland’s team for this month’s International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics European Championships in Italian city Grosseto.

The 16-year-old discus thrower, who marked her IPC Athletics World Championships debut by finishing runner-up in Doha last year with a F38 world record of 31.64 metres, is one of nine athletes to be selected for the event scheduled to take place from June 10 until 17.

Joining Lenihan on the team is fellow discus thrower Orla Barry, winner of the F57 bronze medal in Doha.

She had also won a Paralympic bronze medal at London 2012.

The five other female athletes chosen to compete include F41 discus thrower Niamh McCarthy and F53 shot putter Deirdre Mongan, both of whom secured bronze medals at the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships.

Javelin thrower Lorraine Regan, long jumper Heather Jameson and newcomer Greta Streimikyte, who will compete in the T13 1,500m, make up the quintet.

Completing the team, and also making their senior international debut are T37 400 metres runner Paul Keogan and Conor McIlveen, who will compete in the T38 800m and 1500m.

"This is a strong team that we are sending to European Championships," said James Nolan, Athletics Ireland’s team manager and head of athletics at Paralympics Ireland.

"It’s great to see a mixture of experienced and development athletes on the squad.

"It’s a great opportunity for them to get used to the pressurised environment of major championships prior to Rio [2016], with the added bonus of both Rio and Grosseto having similar weather conditions.

"Recent elite performances by the athletes show that they are close to peak and they are in a position to achieve success at this level.

"For some, that will be podium positions, while for others personal bests are the target."
