Russia claimed the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship title after beating China in the final at the Löfbergs Lila Arena in Karlstad in Sweden.

Having defeated the United States 8-6 in the semi-final, Russia went on to secure the gold medal with a 7-5 victory over China.

Leading by a point going into the last end, Russia were successful on their final draw to the four-foot to out-count China’s stone and seal the win.

"There is lots of emotions," Russia’s Anastasia Bryzgalova, who was partnered by Alexander Krushelnitskiy, said.

"We are very happy.

"Thanks to all our supporters who were with us during this week.

"We felt their support and they helped us to win."

China had earlier won their semi-final 7-5 at the expense of Scotland, who fell to a 9-7 loss against the United States in the bronze medal match.

Canada and Estonia met in the fifth-place playoff with the former coming out 8-2 winners.

The two teams they beat to reach the playoff, Finland and England, went head-to-head for seventh spot and it was the Finns who triumphed 6-3.

Norway and Slovakia overcame Austria and Ireland respectively to earn the right to contest the ninth-place playoff, which the Norwegians won 8-2.

Austria defeated Ireland 9-6 in the battle for 11th position.

As tournament winners, Russia received 14 points towards Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic qualification, while silver medallists China and bronze medallists America earned 12 and 10 points respectively.

The remaining teams ranked from fourth to 12th received between nine points and one point depending on their position.

Also today, Scotland's women and Sweden's men were crowned the world senior curling champions following their gold medal wins at the Karlstad Curling Arena.

Germany had to settle for second spot in the women’s competition after losing 5-4 against Scotland in the final.

Rounding out the top three were Sweden, who beat England 10-5 in the bronze medal match.

Sweden defeated Canada 7-4 in the men’s final with the two nations joined on the podium by Ireland, 7-2 winners against Denmark in the third-place playoff.
