Germany's Karla Borger and Britta Buthe produced a late night shock to beat Brazilian second-seeds Talita Antunes and Larissa Franca to dampen another largely successful day for the host nation at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Tour Maceió Open.

Borger and Buthe, seeded seventh, won a pulsating first set 23-21 in front of a packed crowd on the Pajuçara centre court in the Atlantic resort.

The Brazilians then regained the initiative by taking the second 21-15 before the Germans fought back again to win the decider 15-11 in 49 minutes.

“This is especially pleasing since I have not played in a tournament since I injured my back last July at the European Championships,” said 27-year-old Borger, who had surgery in mid-August.

“I don’t know if this is the biggest win for us, but I know it is very satisfying since we defeated a great team on their home sand.”

It came on a superb day for Germany as both Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst and Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler also secured quarter-final berths in the women's draw.

Italy's Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth inflicted more woe on the host nation by beating fourth seeds Juliana Felisberta and Taiana Lima of Brazil 21-18, 21-16 in 43 minutes.

But two Brazilian pairs did make it through, including top seeds Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas as well as qualifiers Eduarda "Duda" Lisboa and Elize Maia.

Three home pairs have made it through in the men's draw, including leading hopes Evandro Goncalves and Pedro Solberg who will now face ninth-seeded Mexicans Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen for a place in the last four.

There will also be two Brazil versus Poland duals, with Vitor Felipe and Alvaro Filho up against Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel before home qualifiers Saymon Barbos and Gustavo Carvalhaes face Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak.

Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena will face Italy's Adrian Carambula and Alex Ranghieri in the final quarter-final clash.
