Olympic 10 kilometres normal hill champion Eric Frenzel completed a hat-trick of victories at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Combined Triple for the third consecutive year in Seefeld, Austria.

The German has been unbeaten in World Cup competitions at the venue since 2013, racking up nine straight wins at the Austrian resort.

His streak looked under threat after he only achieved a distance of 97 metres during the jumping round, following a delay in competition due to heavy snow, with the German also falling on landing.

It gave him a total of 90.3 points, but with Japan’s Akito Watabe having been awarded 104.2 for his jump, Frenzel was required to overturn a deficit of 56 seconds in 10km cross country race.

Watabe looked on course to finish top of the podium, having been forced to settle for second the previous two days, but a fall during the third lap of the course disrupted his rhythm.

The Japanese star’s misfortune gave Frenzel an opportunity to close the gap in the shortened race, which had been reduced from 15km pre-race due to the tricky weather conditions, and the German came onto the shoulder of his rival in the closing stages.

Frenzel then upped his pace further to surpass Watabe and eventually secure victory in a time of 26min 45.80sec.

The 27-year-old has now completed a hat-trick of victories at each staging of the triple, the highlight of the Nordic Combined calendar, since it was introduced in 2014.

For the third successive day, Watabe had to settle for silver as he crossed the line 18.70 seconds adrift of the winner.

Germany’s Fabian Rießle ensured the podium positions remained unchanged from the previous two events in Seefeld after finishing in 27:54.90, while the Norwegian duo of Joergen Graabak and Magnus Krog narrowly missed out on medals after ending in 27:57.20 and 27:58.80 respectively.

Despite his third place finish, Rießle will be frustrated to be slipping further behind Frenzel in the overall World Cup standings, as he is now 97 points in arrears of his compatriot's tally of 671.

The FIS Nordic Combined World Cup series continues with the next event in Oslo on February 6.
