The 25-year-old, who won this year's season opening event in Lillehammer, was fourth after the ski jumping action with his effort of 117.5 metres enough for 146.9 points.

He started the skiing leg eight seconds behind Norway's jump winner Jarl Riber but made up the time and eventually came home 2.3 seconds in front of Frenzel, who won the first event in Chaux-Neuve yesterday.

Rießle's winning time was 21:20.5, with Japan's Akito Watabe doing enough for a second consecutive bronze medal, 4.1 behind the winner.

The jumping took place in differing conditions with the first half of the field having to battle wind which eventually disappeared.

Riber, competing in the gusts, started at a lower height and his 114m was enough for the jumping victory after gate compensation points were factored in.

His jumping points tally was 148.8 but he fell back to seventh overall after the skiing, 14.2 behind Rießle.

The race itself was a tense affair with five skiers staying bunched together until the final lap, when Rießle clicked through the gears to put himself in command with nobody else about to match his speed.

After six World Cup events this season, Rießle leads the overall standings with 394 points, ahead of Frenzel, the Sochi 2014 gold medallist and defending overall champion who boasts 371.

Watabe is third with a tally of 314.

The season will now continue in Seefeld in Austria, with three World Cup events on consecutive days from January 29.
