The event, the final chance for teams to earn qualifying points for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, is scheduled to take place from April 1 to April 9 at Rexall Place.

The Canadian city last staged the World Men’s Curling Championship in 2007, where the hosts, led by skip Glenn Howard, triumphed on home ice by beating Germany 8-3 in the final.

The competition 10 years ago also attracted a record attendance of 184,970 during the tournament and was held at the same venue.

Rexall Place has a capacity of just under 17,000 and is the current home of National Hockey League side, the Edmonton Oilers.

“Twenty-seventeen will mark 10 years since Edmonton last hosted this event, which proved to be a record-breaking Championship, with the attendance numbers reaching an all-time high,” World Curling Federation President Kate Caithness said.

“We are certain Curling Canada, Ford of Canada and the local Organising Committee will put on yet another great event.

“The competition is set to be extremely exciting, with not only the World Men’s Championship title on offer, but it will be the last chance for the men’s curling teams to earn Olympic qualifying points for Pyeongchang 2018.”

The event will feature 12 teams, including the host country, with the world title and Olympic qualification points both up for grabs.

The seven highest-ranked countries, based on results from this year’s World Championship, due to take place in Basel, Switzerland from April 2 to 10, and the 2017 event, will earn a spot at Pyeongchang 2018, along with hosts South Korea.

The Olympic curling tournament will include ten teams, with the other two decided at a final qualifying event in December 2017.

“Edmonton curling fans have shown their support for major championships repeatedly over the years, and we know it’s going to be another wonderful show, on and off the ice, in 2017,” Hugh Avery, chair of the Curling Canada Board of Directors, added.

“We have amazing partnerships with the World Curling Federation and Ford of Canada, and it’s going to make for a memorable event in Edmonton.”

In February, Edmonton withdrew its bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games due to falling oil prices - with the event subsequently awarded to sole remaining bidder Durban in September.

However, the Albertan capital is considered a potential contender for the 2026 Games.

Canada will also host this year's World Women's Championships, scheduled to be held in Swift Current from March 19 to 27.

Sweden are the defending men's champions having triumphed at the 2015 event in Halifax, Canada.

The Canadians have won the men's title on 34 occasions since the inaugural tournament was staged in 1959.
