David Nakhid's bid to revive his candidacy for FIFA President has been blocked after his appeal against his expulsion was thrown out by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The former Trinidad and Tobago international was barred from standing by world football's governing body after it emerged that, although he had received the required backing of five National Federations, one of these had also supported another candidate.

That decision prompted the 51-year-old, who earned 35 caps for his country, to take his case to the CAS where he sought the annulment of FIFA's decision and an order that his candidacy be reinstated.

CAS ruled, however, that FIFA's Ad-hoc Electoral Committee were correct to state that one Federation had backed two people, in violation of FIFA rules.

"As a consequence, those letters of support were disregarded, meaning that David Nakhid had not met the qualifying criterion of obtaining declarations of support from at least five member associations, and accordingly, his candidature could not be validated," said a CAS statement.

The United States Virgin Islands are thought to be the Federation which pledged backing to two candidates.

FIFA is due hold its election to replace Sepp Blatter in Zurich on February 26, with Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, Jérôme Champagne, Gianni Infantino, Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and Tokyo Sexwale the current contenders.

Frenchman Michel Platini still hopes to stand but is currently banned for 90-days due to an investigation into a payment made to him by Blatter, who was also suspended.

His candidature will be "reassessed" if he is cleared of any wrongdoing with the duo set to face a hearing in front of FIFA judge Hans-Joachim Eckert on Wednesday (December 16).

Liberian Football Association President Musa Bility, meanwhile, is also awaiting a CAS verdict after his candidacy was rejected following a failed integrity check.
