A special ceremony attended by International Olympic Committee President has been held here to re-name the Lausanne-Ouchy metro and bus stops the “Ouchy-Olympique” station, and was attended by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.

Bach visited the station along with Mayor of Lausanne Daniel Brélaz, State Councillor Philippe Leuba and numerous representatives from the Canton of Vaud and Lausanne public transport authorities.

It was organised by the City of Lausanne and comes as the city continues to celebrate 100 years of the IOC being based here in the Swiss city.

Bach unveiled a commemorative plaque at the entrance to station, which has also been decorated with an Olympic theme as miniature athletes taking part in a parade at an Opening Ceremony now adorn the walls.

Pictures of athletes at Olympic Games have been included in the display while white lines, representative of those found on an athletics track, also feature prominently.

The display is permanent and now available for viewing.

"The new Ouchy metro station décor perfectly illustrates the passion that Lausanne has for sport and Olympism," Bach said.

“Olympism is in the DNA of Lausanne, and even more so with the organisation of the Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2020.

“I am certain that Ouchy and its new Olympic metro station will play an important role in this celebration.”

Bach also highlighted the ties between the region and the Olympic Movement, which has seen Lausanne become known as the Olympic capital.

“Ouchy is a symbolic place for the IOC,” Bach added.

“It was perhaps here that our joint history began.

"Our founder, Pierre de Coubertin, was invited by the Vaud Council of State on a boat trip in 1913.

"Ouchy was also Coubertin’s favourite place to practise rowing.”
