The United States’ Tatyana McFadden has been named among the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Allianz Athlete of the Month nominees for November after completing a sweep of the four major wheelchair marathons for the third straight year.

McFadden set a new course record of 1 hour 43min 04sec to win the women’s wheelchair race in New York City last month and add to her triumphs in London, Boston and Chicago earlier in 2015.

It also ensured her 12th consecutive major wheelchair marathon victory, underlining her sheer dominance from 2013 onwards.

McFadden faces competition from five other athletes for the award, including Ukrainian judoka Inna Cherniak.

Cherniak won gold in the women’s under 57 kilogram event at the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) European Judo Championships and was also integral in helping Ukraine win the women’s open classification team event.

Germany’s Anna-Lena Forster, winner of both slalom races at the IPC Alpine Skiing Europa Cup at the expense of Austrian world champion Claudia Loesch in the Dutch municipality of Landgraaf, has been nominated as well.

Filipino duo Rhea Marquez and Jun Julius Obero, gold medallists in the freestyle class two at the IPC Wheelchair Dance Sport World Championships in Rome, also nominated.

Also in contention are Iran’s Zahra Nemati, who collected a quota space for her country for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games after winning the recurve women’s open competition at the Asian Para-Archery Championships in Bangkok.

Earlier in the month, she had also secured an Olympic quota place for Iran, finishing runner-up at the Asian Championships in Bangkok.

Ukrainian powerlifter Mariana Shevchuk.

The 19-year-old Shevchuk, who left the 2015 European Open with a junior world record and four medals, securing the Junior Open and European gold, as well as senior European silver and Open bronze in the women’s up to 55kg, is also among the contenders.

The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees and International Federations.

The public has until 12pm (CET) on December 9 to vote for the athlete they want to be the Allianz Athlete of the Month for November by clicking here.

Italian wheelchair fencer Beatrice Vio won the prize for October after winning her seventh straight major event at the World Cup in Paris.
