Musco claim the new LED lights will deliver superior broadcast quality lighting as well as substantially reduce energy consumption in comparison to metal halide light sources.

The dimming controls will allow for the light output to be varied when full power is not needed, saving additional energy, while the floodlights will have instant on/off capabilities allowing for special effects and eliminating the time for the lamps to warm up.

The installation also includes custom-designed reflectors that significantly reduce spill light and glare for players and spectators.

The new lighting system is part of the Rugby Football Union's (RFU) stadium redevelopment programme as the build-up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup continues.

Twickenham is one of 13 venues being used for rugby's showpiece event, which will see 20 teams competing across 48 matches during the tournament that runs from September 18 to October 31.

"We were the first stadium in Europe to install mid-tier LEDs and believe we are now the first to have LED floodlights designed," said Twickenham Stadium director, Richard Knight.

"Better quality lighting will allow us to improve the viewing experience for fans both in the stadium and at home by keeping ahead of fast-moving developments in TV technology.

"This innovative product also has the added benefit of being more energy efficient and requiring less maintenance."

The RFU plans to have the new lighting system installed in time for the autumn international series later this year.

Twickenham is one of the largest sporting arenas in Europe with a capacity of more than 82,000 and it hosted the final of the 1991 Rugby World Cup which saw Australia overcome hosts England 12-6.

Based in Iowa in the United States, Musco Lighting was established in 1976 and although focussing mainly on sporting events, the firm has provided lighting for major television and film productions in the US.

The company has partnerships with a number of sports stadiums in the US across baseball, American football and motorsports and provided lighting for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

"Musco is proud to work with the Rugby Football Union to provide an efficient, state-of-the-art lighting solution using LED technology for this iconic stadium," said President of Musco World, Jeff Rogers.

"The RFU's forward thinking and concern for the responsible use of energy are commendable."
