American mens_eight_rowing_teamJune 18 - America's men's eight rowing team, who are set to be major medal contenders at London 2012 this summer, have been awarded the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Team of the Month prize for May after a sensational few weeks.

The team secured their place at London 2012 following a hugely impressive victory at the 2012 Final Olympic Qualification Regatta on May 22 in Lucerne.

The team crossed the line in 5min 36.11sec which was nearly four seconds faster that the second-place finisher New Zealand.

The team of Zach Vlahos, Grant James, David Banks, Steve Kasprzyk, Jake Cornelius, Brett Newlin, Ross James, Will Miller and Giuseppe Lanzone will now hope to continue their impressive form at the Olympics in just over a month – when the rowing event takes place at Eton Dorney in Windsor.

The US women's national water polo team finished runner-up behind the men's eight rowing team in the voting for the USOC Team of the Month while the tennis duo of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan took third spot.

Meanwhile two Paralympic track and field athletes claimed the male and female Athlete of the Month prizes with Jeremy Campbell and Tatyana McFadden picking up the awards respectively.

The recipients are nominated by their National Governing Body, who may put forward one female, one male and one team per discipline.

A voting panel selects the winners from the pool of nominees with online fan voting via Twitter accounting for 10 per cent of the total vote.
