The club's South Course, which will be used in 2021, played host to the 2008 US Open and witnessed a dramatic play-off victory for Tiger Woods over Rocco Mediate, which remains the last time the current world number one tasted victory in a major.

USGA President Thomas O'Toole Jr made the announcement at Torrey Pines and was joined by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and other city officials.

"As in 2008, we are excited to partner with the City of San Diego to bring golf's most democratic major Championship back to such a great public venue," he said.

"The San Diego area embraced the 2008 US Open and we are seeing the same enthusiasm for the return of the US Open in 2021.

"We have a great partner in the City of San Diego and this community loves golf."

Torrey Pines is a public facility owned by the City of San Diego and contains two 18-hole courses; the North Course and the South Course.

In January this year, both courses were used for the Farmers Insurance Open, won by Scott Stallings.

The club has played host to a Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour event since 1968, during which time the likes of Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and local man Phil Mickelson have all claimed multiple wins.

The facility also hosts the San Diego City Amateur Golf Championship every June and the Junior World Golf Championships every July.

Father and son William P and William F Bell designed the original Torrey Pines golf courses, which were first opened in 1957 before Rees Jones completed a redesign of the course in 2002.

"The City of San Diego is proud to welcome back the United States Golf Association and host another major Championship," said Mayor Faulconer.

"Torrey Pines is a fantastic venue for the US Open and a great opportunity to showcase San Diego's first-class hotels, restaurants and shops.

"Just as San Diego served as home to one of the greatest Championships in golf history in 2008, we're confident that we will once again provide an exciting and dynamic venue for 2021."

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the USGA will pay the city $2.5 million (£1.5 million/€1.8 million) for hosting the event,while it will also get a share of hospitality revenues that could potentially produce more than $1.5 million (£910,000/€1.1 million) from the tournament, which is scheduled to run from June 17 to 20.

This year's US Open is due tol take place at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina from June 12 to 15.
