144175372February 25 - Bayern Munich FC have joined forces with Munich and the state of Bavaria in an attempt to bring matches from the 2020 European Championships to the city at the German champions Allianz Arena home.

European football governing body UEFA confirmed last month that Euro 2020 would be staged in 13 different cities across the continent for the first time, and Bayern revealed that they would apply to the German Football Association (DFB) to become one of them.

Euro 2020 matches will be split into 13 packages, with 12 ordinary match packages up for grabs, consisting of three group matches and one knockout round match (round of 16 or quarter-finals), and one package for the much-coveted semi-finals and  final.

Bayern chief executive, two-time former European Footballer of the Year Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, announced that Munich would be bidding for both packages, but winning the finals package would be the "absolute highlight"

"We have shown with the staging of the UEFA Champions League final in 2012, that we are able to receive the football world as a friendly and a good host." he said.

Munich will face competition from Berlin, Dortmund and Stuttgart, who have also shown interest in hosting games at the 2020 Euro's, with each football association given only one city to put forward for hosting rights.

In terms of hosting the semi-finals and final, Wembley Stadium in London, which will host this year's UEFA Champions League Final, is considered to be a strong bidding rival, along with Rome and Madrid, but the Turkish city of Istanbul is believed to be the favourite if it does not win the race to host the 2020 Olympic Games with Madrid and Tokyo - the winner of which is due be announced on September 7 this year.

UEFA is set to open the formal bidding process for Euro 2020 this April, with the deadline for bids set for September 2013.

Host cities are due to be chosen by the UEFA Executive Committee in September 2014.
