Annefleur Kalvenhaar died a day after crashing during a qualifying race ©annefleurkalvenhaar.nlA Dutch rider has died after crashing during the International Cycling Union (UCI) Mountain Bike World Cup.

Annefleur Kalvenhaar had an accident during a qualifying elimination round in Méribel, France.

The reigning Under-23 European Cyclo-Cross world champion was taken to Grenoble hospital after Friday's crash and placed in intensive care.

The 20-year-old died this morning.

"I'm devastated that cycling has lost one of its members at such a young age," said UCI President Brian Cookson.

"Our deepest thoughts are with her family and friends.''

European Cycling Union President David Lappartient described the death as "a shock for everyone".

He added: "The cycling movement, particularly the European family, cries the death of this young woman.

"In this moment of sadness, our thoughts are with Annefleur's family and friends."
