AIBA lift ban on Indian boxers and coaches
Sunday, 24 February 2013
February 24 - The International Boxing Association (AIBA) have decided to allow Indian boxers and coaches to compete in competition although the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) itself will remain suspended.
AIBA announced the suspension of the IABF last December after the IOC suspended the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for not holding their elections under the Olympic Charter in its election process.
AIBA's move to suspend the IABF came after Abhay Singh Chautala, its chairman, was controversially elected IOA President in the move that caused their suspension from the Olympics.
But, following a plea to AIBA President and Taiwanese IOC member CK Wu from India's IOC member Randhir Singh not to punish the boxers for the mistakes of the IABF, the ban on the fighters has been lifted.
"The Indian Amateur Boxing Federation has been informed on Saturday 23 February that despite its on-going suspension, the AIBA Executive Committee Bureau had decided to exceptionally allow Indian boxers and coaches only (no official whatsoever) to participate in AIBA Competitions (approved events) under the AIBA flag," said an AIBA statement.
"This means that the IABF may register boxers and coaches only to the ASBC Youth Boxing Championships due to take place from March 10-17, 2013 in Subic Bay, Philippines, and to future AIBA Competitions."
AIBA's ban was also imposed after the world governing body "learned about possible manipulation of the recent IABF's election".
The IABF, however, remain hopeful there will not have to be new elections if Chautala's position of chairman is removed.
They are currently looking to abolish the role, which could lead to a full lifting of the IABF suspension.
