April 20 - Today saw swimmers compete in the third day of action at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre ©Getty Images Stephanie Slater continued her fine form at the British Para-Swimming International Meet in Glasgow today by taking the 100 metres butterfly title and breaking the world record in the process to add to the two silver medals and European record already in the bag.

The 23-year-old from Preston had already beaten her own S8 European record in the morning heats at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, before setting a world's best time of 1min 09.67sec to finish ahead of Spain's Sarai Gascon and S9 world champion Amy Marren in the multi-classification event.

"Words can't describe how I'm feeling about setting a new world record," said Slater, who beat the previous mark of 1:09.79 set by American Jessica Long at last year's World Championships in Montreal.

"I had it in the back of my mind to go for the record but I just went out to do the best I could.

"It's an amazing feeling.

"I've been working a lot on the technical side of my strokes at the National Performance Centre in Manchester and it's made a lot of difference.

"I'm looking forward to focusing even more on this to see what I can achieve."

That was Slater's fifth qualification time of the meeting for the upcoming International Paralympic Committee (IPC) European Swimming Championships in Eindhoven in August.

Paralympic, world and European champion Jonathan Fox narrowly missed out on breaking his own world record in the S7 100m backstroke by just 00.05sec, as he secured gold with 998 points and a spot in Eindhoven with a time of 1:09.57.

Tucker Dupree of the United States and Dutchman Marc Evers took the silver and bronze medals.

In the women's event, Northern Ireland's Bethany Firth claimed her third gold medal of the meeting with a 1,032 points swim to finish clear of the Netherland's Summer Ashley Mortimer and Briton Hannah Russell in a time of 1:06.00.

All three met the European qualification standard for the Championships in Eindhoven which run from August 4 to 10; however, Firth will not be eligible to compete as her switch from competing for Ireland to Britain does not come into effect until after the Championships.

Susie Rodgers also met the European qualifying time in the 100m backstroke, while she secured gold in the 50m butterfly with 819 points.

Rodgers touched home in a time of 36.17 ahead of American Cortney Jordan and team-mate Elizabeth Johnson.

"It's been quite a good meet for me," said the 30-year-old.

"My focus is on the worlds [IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow] next year so I'm really pleased to have got the qualification standard for the summer as this will be a great stepping stone."

Andrew Mullen was another home swimmer to meet the Euro qualifying standard as his time of 38.33 was comfortably inside the mark in the MC 50m butterfly event.

Mullen finished with 707 points to take silver behind S5 world champion Roy Perkins of the United States who finished with 752 points.

Mullen's teammate Matthew Walker took bronze.

The British Para-Swimming International Meet in Glasgow is due to conclude tomorrow.
