The Army came into the match looking to seal a fourth straight gold medal in the event, while the Marines were looking to add to their win at the inaugural Games in 2010.

The Marines were in dominant form right from the start, gaining an early 10-5 lead 10 minutes into the game and widening that gap to 21-4 by halftime.

Their momentum continued in the second half, as the Army was unable to chip away at the gap, eventually going down by 13 points.

Corporal Jorge Salazar was the star performer for the Marines on the night, registering 15 points and three rebounds.

"We played as a team," said Salazar, who also competed in sitting volleyball, swimming and athletics vents.

"We didn't get upset with each other, we stayed focused on the game, and we worked as one team.

"My whole experience at the Warrior Games has been tough, but exciting.

"We've had to work very hard.

"We had a tough loss to the Army in the gold match last year, so it was a great feeling beating them this year.

"We played our hearts out."

Earlier in the day, the Marines also enjoyed success in the shooting events, winning a total of 10 medals including golds for Sergeant Pedro Aquino and retired Corporal Richard Stalder in the standing rifle and prone rifle disciplines respectively.

Five more medals for the Army helped them to top the overall table at the end of six days of competition in Colorado Springs.

The Army ended with 71 medals in total, well clear of the Marines, whose last day haul helped them finish ahead of the third-placed Air Force.

Staff Sergeant Sean Pena ensured the Air Force ended the day with one top-of-the-podium finish after firing his way to victory in the SH1 pistol.

"The competition today was great," said Pena.

"It was fun to show the other branches that the Air Force can hold its own when it comes to shooting.

"This has been a great week, and I look forward to competing again next year."
