The Agitos Foundation are due to open their Change Makers campaign on Sunday ©Agitos FoundationMarch 28 - Dozens of "ChangeMaker" stories will be showcased by the Agitos Foundation from this weekend in a two-week celebration to mark the United Nations International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on April 6.

This follows a call last month by the Foundation, the development arm of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), for organisations and individuals alike to share stories about how sport has changed their lives or the societies in which they live.

The aim was to bring together projects the Agitos Foundation already knew about, as well as to discover work being carried out under the radar into its network.

Submissions consist of stories about projects, such as a football team established in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake in 2010, as well as accounts from volunteers and individuals.

This includes an account by an individual who took up wheelchair basketball with Active Disabled People Albania after a work accident and found that taking up the sport helped him in both his physical and mental recovery.

The theme of "ChangeMakers" was also something cited by IPC President Sir Philip Craven during his speeches for both the Opening and Closing Ceremony of the Winter Paralympics in Sochi held earlier this month.

Agitos Foundation director Georg Schlachtenberger also claimed being "totally overwhelmed by the response we received when we asked for ChangeMakers to share their stories with us".

"We know how much work goes on every day in organisations, countries, cities, towns and even villages all around the world, particularly by volunteers, but we are delighted that so many of the people involved, and even individuals, took the time to contact us," he added.

"As a result we now have to spread the stories over two whole weeks, ahead of and leading away from the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, to give each story the spotlight it deserves."

The Agitos Foundation will begin publishing the 45 stories here as well as on Twitter and Facebook.

The Facebook page, which can be found here, will be officially launched on April 6 to mark the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, but the page will go live seven days before on Sunday (March 30) when the first of the stories will be posted.

The campaign is due to run until April 13.
