The United States thrashed Japan to retain their Junior Women's Softball World Championship in Clearwater today.

The Americans defended the title they won in Oklahoma City two years ago after claiming a 13-4 win over the number one ranked side in the world at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.

Earlier in the day, Japan had defeated Puerto Rico 7-2 in the bronze medal match to advance to the final.

The US started the gold medal contest quickly and scored three times in their first innings.

That included a sensational strike from Madilyn Nickles, who sent the ball crashing off the outfield lights.

Japan replied by scoring three of their own through Urara Fujimoto, Azumi Shimomura and Eri Shimoyama.

The Asian country then pulled in front in the second with Miyu Miyamoto scoring a single.

Japan led until the fifth when the Americans completely turned proceedings around.

Five runs in the fifth innings followed by two in the sixth and three in the seventh gave them an unassailable lead as they won their fourth gold medal in the last five editions of this event.

It was America's sixth title in 12th tournaments since the Championship started in 1981, including four in the last five.

Mexico were victorious in the placement round final.

They found themselves up against the Philippines, after they had beaten the Dominican Republic 2-0 earlier in the day.

It was Mexico who went on to seal ninth place though as they defeated the Philippines 5-3.

The tournament took place before women's softball's return to the Olympic stage at Tokyo 2020.
