Spanish curler Irantzu Garcia has been in Füssen in Germany to take part in a number of World Curling Federation courses as she aims to grow the sport in her homeland.

The 24-year-old attended the basic umpire and advanced instruction classes.

They form part of a series of courses that run every year during July.

Garcia claims that developing curling in Spain was a source of motivation for her taking part in the educational activities.

“I have never taken any of the courses before and it was an outstanding experience," she said.

"I've had some opportunities to get started in umpiring and would love to do a few events in the future.

"I took the advanced instructor course because I want to be able to introduce curling to more people back in Spain.

“Spain is a small curling community and we definitely need more umpires and coaches to make it grow.”

Garcia has represented her country at the World Mixed Doubles, World Mixed and European Curling Championships.

Most recently she competed at this year's Mixed Doubles event in Lethbridge with her brother Gontzal as they were beaten in the round of 16.

Irantzu won bronze at the World Mixed Doubles Championships in 2014 with her cousin Sergio Vez.

Garcia believes the courses are not just for officials and administrators, but they are also great for athletes to hone their knowledge of the game.

“It's interesting and fun at the same time and even if you are mostly an athlete as I am, it also helps you understand our sport from different sides," she added.

"It's basic to know all the rules to be a great player.”
