Germany and The Netherlands began to pull away at the top of the women’s standings at the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) European Championships in Tenerife.

Defending champions Germany have recorded three straight wins on the Spanish Canary Island, with their latest success coming against Turkey.

Despite being much improved from their heavy 81-17 loss to The Netherlands yesterday, Turkey were unable to surprise Germany in El Galeon.

The German team secured a 57-21 victory to remain with a 100 per cent record.

The Netherlands joined them at the head of the standings as they beat Britain 63-35, leaving their opponents lying in third place.

France are fourth following a 56-50 win against Spain.

Israel recorded their first victory of the men’s competition as they overcame Sweden 66-53, pushing their rivals to the bottom of the Group B standings.

Defending champions Britain secured a third straight win when they beat Lithuania 120-52, while Turkey matching the same feat when they overcame Germany 87-45.

Spain beat France 64-54 to maintain their unbeaten record in Group A.

Italy were unable match the Spanish team as they were beaten 52-50 by the Netherlands, while Switzerland fell to a 76-59 loss against Poland.

As well as continental glory, places at the 2018 IWBF World Championships in Hamburg are also up for grabs, with the best six men's teams reaching the German city.

Only one women's team will fail to qualify.
