Participants at the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Congress were given an overview of the current state of preparations for the next year's Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

Pyeongchang 2018 informed over 200 sports journalists of their progress at the event, which came to an end today.

It was staged at a time of political uncertainty in South Korea, which elected Moon Jae-in as the country's new President on Tuesday (May 9), which coincided with the opening day of the Congress.

The first two days of the annual gathering took place in Seoul, before attendees travelled to Pyeongchang.

They then toured venues due to be used for the Games in the South Korean resort, which run from February 9 to 25.

The group visited facilities at Alpensia, where ski jumping, biathlon, cross-country skiing, luge, bobsleigh and skeleton will be staged, and in nearby Gangueng, the home of ice sports such as curling and ice hockey.

Pyeongchang 2018 claim their progress update, which included revealing how "cutting edge" IT services will feature at the event, was the highlight of the agenda at the Congress.

It is thought the Organising Committee are on track with construction of the venues but are struggling in other areas, including promotion, sponsorship and engagement.

"With only 273 days until the Olympic Games, the international media is showing more interest than ever before," Pyeongchang 2018 President Lee Hee-beom, who gave a welcome speech at the Congress, said.

"The AIPS Congress is a great opportunity for leading sports journalists to get a glimpse of our preparations and visit the site of the most compact and largest Winter Games ever."

AIPS President Gianni Merlo praised the organisation of the event.

"South Korea has done a fantastic job to host such an event in a very difficult situation with the elections and a Government that changed completely," he said.

"The overall preparations have been fantastic.”
