India claimed a shoot-out victory over Chile to win the final Hockey World League (HWL) women's round two event in West Vancouver today.

Both countries had already qualified for the semi-finals of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) competition, but it was India who won the tournament at Ambleside Rutledge Field in the Canadian city.

It was the South Americans who took the lead, however, scoring in the fifth minute through Maria Maldonado.

Chile began to play an increasingly defensive game as India piled on the pressure.

Their defence finally collapsed in the 41st minute when Anupa Barla scored from a penalty corner to bring India level.

With neither side able to move ahead, the game went to a penalty shoot-out.

India were more clinical, winning it 3-1 thanks in large part to a sublime display from stopper Savita who saved two Chilean attempts and was then awarded the goalkeeper of the tournament prize.

Belarus claimed third place following a 4-2 success against Uruguay.

Nastassia Syrayezhka smashed in a rebounded shot to give the Europeans a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the match.

Just before the end of the first quarter, Uruguay's Milagros Algorta managed to level the game at 1-1 before Belarus' lead was restored as Sviatlana Bahushevich fired home from close range.

Belarus went 3-1 ahead after a penalty corner through captain Ryta Batura, who was named player of the tournament, before Algorta grabbed her second.

Batura then scored again in the closing stages to secure the bronze medal for her country.

Four goals from the tournament's top scorer Brienne Stairs was enough to earn hosts Canada fifth place as they defeated Mexico 4-0.
