Rio 2016 Olympic Games bronze medallists Geno Petriashvili of Georgia and Germany's Denis Kudla are set to compete at the European Under-23 Wrestling Championships, due to be held in Szombathely in Hungary from tomorrow.

Defending champion Petriashvili will attempt to retain his title in the 125 kilograms freestyle category while Kudla, who won gold in the inaugural edition of this event in 2015, will be hoping to win his second Greco-Roman 85kg gold on the final day of the event at Arena Savaria.

Petriashvili, who also won the senior European Championships crown last year, is favourite to win his class on the second day of freestyle bouts.

The Championships are expected to provide an insight into who will potentially challenge for medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The first day of competition tomorrow opens with returning champion Imam Adzhiev of Russia, who is moving up from 61kg in the freestyle discipline, trying to impress at 65kg.

Another gold medallist from the 2016 senior European Championships, Gadshimurad Rashidov of Russia, is expected to go far in the freestyle 61kg competition.

Koumba Larroque of France has won a number of cadet and junior titles in recent years and will aim to continue her dominance at 69kg on Thursday (March 30).

Returning champions and Turkish teammates Evin Demirhan and Buse Tosun are set to compete in tomorrow's 48kg and 69kg freestyle competitions respectively.

Senior freestyle world champion Oksana Herhel of Ukraine is the hot favourite at 60kg.

Petra Olli of Finland, winner of the 60kg freestyle competition in 2015, is set to move up to 63kg in a bid for her second under-23 title while Ukraine's Tatyana Kit goes in search of her second consecutive 58kg freestyle gold on day two.

Double junior world champion Ramaz Zoidse of Georgia will be seeking under-23 Greco-Roman gold at 71kg after a bronze medal last year while his teammate, Gela Bolkvadze, will be attempting to retain the Greco-Roman 80kg crown for a third straight year.

The final day of the championships opens with Rio 2016 bronze medallist Shmagi Bolkvadze of Georgia wrestling in his first under-23 Greco-Roman competition at 66kg.

Another Georgian, Lasha Gobadze, won back-to-back Greco-Roman titles at 80kg but will be hoping to a win a third at the slightly heavier weight of 85kg this week.

Gobadze joins 2015 champion Kudla, defending champion Erik Szilvassy of Hungary, double junior world champion Islam Abbasov of Azerbaijan and 2015 junior winner Ali Cengiz of Turkey in that division.
